Did you know 50% of the UK population are estimated to suffer from haemorrhoids (otherwise known as piles) at some point in their life?
The most common group of sufferers are pregnant woman. In fact, a recent survey estimated a staggering 48% of pregnant women suffer from haemorrhoids- whether it's during the pregnancy or after the birth- that's a whopping 350,000 women this year alone, most of whom suffer in silence.
What are haemorrhoids? Haemorrhoids are swollen veins around the back passage which may itch, ache or feel sore. They are prone to bleeding and make going to the toilet uncomfortable and often very painful.
To try and avoid this unpleasant ailment, drink at least eight glasses of water a day- as this will help your bowel move more easily and eat plenty of fibre.
Top tips if you do find yourself suffering:
- Take a long hot bath
- Try not to sit or stand for too long
- Use a natural haemorrhoid cream- to safely relieve the discomfort
- Use a moist, hygienic wipe when passing stools- rough toilet paper can often aggravate the inflamed delicate area. A moist wipe will cleanse and soothe.
